What is Meliora Weekend
Meliora Weekend was founded in 2001 following the successful Sesquicentennial celebration of 2000. The weekend celebrates reunions, family weekend and homecoming activities. It is designed for alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff and friends of the University of Rochester. More: http://www.rochester.edu/melioraweekend/

There were lots of events. This year we had Bill Clinton to give a keynote and for entertainment session we had Russel Peters. I missed all of those, but managed the ending of the celebration with fire juggling and fireworks. Some photos from the event.

I don't think people panic this much in Bangladesh or in Florida for hurricane. I think the main reason the media/govt is panicked so much is because: i. Its not usual for north-east coast, ii. After katrina, govt is trying to be very careful, so that there are less damage and people are safer. In any case, for good/bad, I happen to be in NYC to welcome Ms. Irene at my uncle's place. I thought to do what i like the most - taking some photos. I pray and hope for everyone's safety and lets hope this album gets an happy ending..

Sardinian group Sa Roda's performance

I wanted to check out the churches at Barcelona. What could be a better day than a Sunday! I ended up going to the church today (even though didn't take photos of the church!) and found few people in some traditional dress. I talked to few of them and came to know that they are from Sardinia, an island in the Mediterranean. They will dance in front of the church after an hour. Wandered around, shot some photos of their preparation, inside the church and finally their traditional performance. Name of their group is Sa Roda. It was really a nice performance and they were really very nice people.

This lovely couple explained me at first about the event, later others explained in more details.

Celebration of Sant Joan's

Sant John's celebration is big in Barcelona. People get a holiday next day to celebrate it all night! I was told that it is celebrated everywhere, but mostly around the beach areas. Three symbols of this celebration are: fire, water and herbs. For obvious reasons, beach makes a good venue for this celebration :) Check more details about this event here.

The evening started with hanging around the parks and the streets. This good-looking, handsome dog caught my attention.

A guy, busy on the phone with a handsome dog - good combination to earn some money :) I spent 15 cents to take these photos.

Then we went to a Basque style restaurant/bar. They give you a plate and you eat anything from the display. In the end, they will count the toothpick.

Firecrackers like these will be everywhere - some of them with lots of noise and some of them with lots of flames..

I couldn't find my other friends by this time and it was 2'ish by then. So after some effort to find them, I went home. People mostly stays much longer and many of them all night.. 2am was enough for me :)

A rainy day at Barcelona

It all started with my wet clothes*! I washed them the day before yesterday, dried them yesterday like the way people do it here in Barcelona (and in Bangladesh), then it wasn't as dry as I am used to. So I thought I will leave them for another day. This another day had rain, which I didn't check in the forecast! So its still there for another day (because I am lazy) then it will get another wash then will be there for another day to get dried :)

*These are not all my wet clothes. I had more on the other side :)

I bought this thing long before, but never used it! Its the rain coat for my camera :) After taking the picture of my wet clothes, I thought may be I should take some pictures outside. Here it goes... A rainy day at Barcelona.

Its not typical Rambla street.

This Moka restaurant made me "boka" in my first day with 5.5 euro orange juice. Later I found another restaurant had coke for 7 euros! Food prices in this tourist spot is not too high, probably 2-3 euros extra. They make money with the drinks. So be it Moka or Khoka, everyone will make you boka.

Champions League Final

I was lucky to be in Barcelona when Barcelona defeated Man U to win the Champions League Final. The game and the celebration were all very good until I lost my phone and wallet with cards, IDs and some cash. Given that Barcelona tops the list now in pickpocketing tourists (check one list here), not much I could do in this case where there were lots of noise and lots of people. I just feel lucky that I still have my passport!

It all started since the morning. All the bars, restaurants had Barcelona flags. You can tell something is going to happen today.

I watched the game in a small bar. I wonder if there are any dedicated football (the real football) bars at Rochester. Watching the game, even in a small bar was lots of fun.

Barcelona First Sight

I am interning at Yahoo! Research, Barcelona this summer. This gives me a great opportunity to do what I like the best - photography. However, I took the longest time to click the shutter after landing in a new country. Finally after 23 hours 25 minutes, I couldn't hold myself anymore.

This is from the balcony of my room. I found the buildings in this area very similar to the ones in Bangladesh.

But the streets look like typical European streets. The view from my apartment - street to Las Ramblas.

People dries clothes like Bangladeshis :) I also saw this in Malta as well. May be many European countries do the same.

Plaça Catalunya

There was a protest in Plaça Catalunya. People were protesting against the government, which they claim is fake democracy. Similar instances in Bangladesh would end as strikes, which would frustrate general people even more. The Americans won't even care even when the government spends their tax dollars for useless things. I highly respected this peaceful demonstration. Spanish police came today to remove these protesters in the excuse of cleaning for tomorrow's big game. But the protesters came back again at night! Those people were so lively and full of energy. A police was asking a woman to sit in the next stair. She was adamant to sit where she was sitting. They forced her to move, but if it was in the Bangladesh she probably would have been badly beaten and may be in the US, people won't dare to say anything against the police. Check the next few photos and a video here.

I asked many people what was happening, none of them could explain to me well in English. Finally these two people explained to me what was happening and their stand against the government.

You won't believe it's 12 at night.

People were sitting in the road - eating, gossiping. I am not sure if this is due to the protest or normal Barcelona night! I have to figure it out in the coming days :)

Letchworth State Park is sometime called the Grand Canyon of the East. I don't think it is comparable to Grand Canyon in terms of size, but this place is special in its own merit. A small sized Grand Canyon, with Water Falls in Fall with colored trees - Letchworth State Park is one of its kind.

Sky is the limit!

The Randy Pausch memorial bridge. I was looking forward to this one actually. If you don't know about Randy Pausch, check this video.

Mini-castle like houses! You can see the European influences all around.

Churches all around! I am not sure if this is common in Pittsburgh, or something to do with the place (around CMU), but there were lots and lots of churches (normal church, Korean church, Unitarian church, and many more)... All these in 20 mins of walking distance! I might missed many other churches too. Probably the area is just a church area :)

Food! There are actually very good restaurants around. I had a good food time :) I would recommend to try restaurants there, they were pretty good.

Igor in JFK

I was going to Pittsburgh for a conference and had a 3 hour wait at JFK. At first I was trying to do some work and later thought I should take some photographs. I was hunting for interesting subjects and shoe polishing caught my eyes! In that process I met an immigrant from Ukraine, Igor Sauchuk, a shoe polisher at first sight, but a very talented individual. He wrote a book, Only About The Love Of God and captured many of his adventurous experiences in a professional quality video (created in Ukraine). It was an unique experience to meet Igor. We were hoping to get some customers so that I can take photographs of shoe polishing, but it ended up being some waiting pictures :-) Enjoy!

Update: 2010-10-10: I went to NYC and was coming back from JFK and met Igor again! This time with a customer :-) Few photos added in the end.

I discovered this place after 3 years living in Rochester! If you live around Rochester, you should check this out! You can get homegrown, fresh-picked fruits and vegetables!

In case you don't know about this, according to City of Rochester's website: "With a resounding 2,400-vote margin over its nearest competitor, the Rochester Public Market won the 2010 America’s Favorite Farmers Market contest, with over 5,200 votes. " Don't miss the best farmer's market in the country!

Yet another blog by me

I have lost count for my blogs, none of which I actually maintain or write regularly! But I am hoping that this particular blog will be different, i.e. it will be maintained! :-) I am hopeful about this one, because I will be writing less in this blog and posting more pictures for people's sharing, viewing, downloading and buying prints. At that same time, I will try to share my views on taking pictures of particular thing as well. Question is, what are the subjects of my pictures? Answer is, it is mostly travel photography, sometimes known, iconic places, sometimes random things from different places, where I get to travel for presenting my work in different conferences. Thanks to my graduate school advisor :-)

I will start my blog with this picture, which was taken from Colloseum (Rome, Italy). I personally like this picture because to me the red bricks of the Colloseum have a texture of inviting to view the other side. My invite is to view the other side, i.e. exploring my blog :-) Enjoy!
